As of Thursday, January 1, 2015, John P. Fuller, Jason S. Hammond and Brian D. Morrison have joined Charles R. Bailey and Marc J. Slotnick as Equity Shareholders of Bailey & Slotnick, PLLC, a member of Bailey & Wyant PLLC.

Mr. Fuller obtained his law degree from the Claude W. Pettitt College of Law, Ohio Northern University located in Ada, Ohio in 2002. He received his undergraduate degree from the Lewis College of Business, Marshall University.  He concentrates his practice in the areas of Civil Rights defense, Governmental Liability, Insurance Coverage and General Civil defense.

Mr. Hammond obtained his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1999 and received his Bachelor’s degree in Government from West Virginia Wesleyan College. He concentrates his practice on Civil Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Construction Litigation, Personal Injury law and Environmental Litigation.

Mr. Morrison attended the West Virginia University College of Law, from where he graduated in 1997 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Marshall University.  He concentrates his practice on Civil Litigation, including Personal Injury Litigation, Premises Liability, Contractual disputes, Insurance Coverage disputes and Insurance Bad Faith litigation.

Prior to January 1, each were partners of the firm.

Oko-ogua Gains Exclusive Invite to Join The National Black Top 100 Lawyers of 2015

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC is pleased to announce that Suleiman Oko-ogua has been invited to join The National Black Top 100 Lawyers for the year 2015.

Membership into The National Black Lawyers: Top 100 Lawyers is by invitation only. To be invited the attorney must exemplify exceptional qualifications and leadership in their state and chosen focus.

Oko-ogua is an Associate in Bailey & Wyant, PLLC’s Charleston office. Originally from Nigeria, West Africa, Oko-ogua moved to the United States in 1997 to attend college. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of law in 2004. Prior to joining Bailey & Wyant, Oko-ogua was a prosecutor and private attorney for about three years. He also clerked for a Kentucky State Judge.

“I am extremely pleased to be recognized by The National Black Lawyers,” Oko-ogua said.

Suleiman practices in the areas of civil litigation, most notably civil rights litigation, employment law and insurance defense. Notably, Suleiman has successfully defended various government agencies and employees in various civil rights and employment law cases filed against them.

Andy Herrick, an Associate in the Charleston office, was one of four presenters at the Landlord-Tenant Law seminar Tuesday, January 13. Andy presented on the subjects of Tenant Default, Notice of Default, and Lease Termination.

Four Bailey & Wyant Attorneys Listed in the West Virginia Edition of Super Lawyers

Mr. Charles Bailey is a managing member of Bailey & Wyant, PLLC. Mr. Bailey was also listed in the 2008 and 2009 editions of West Virginia Super Lawyers in the General Litigation category. He received his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law and his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism also from West Virginia University.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Miami University and his law degree from Indiana University.

Mr. Wyant is the past President of the West Virginia Defense Trial Counsel and a member of the Defense Research Institute. His practice areas include medical malpractice, products liability, industrial accidents, extra-contractual bad faith claims, construction claims, governmental liability, labor and employment litigation.

Mr. Buck was listed in 2013 also under the civil litigation category. Mr. Buck is a member of Bailey & Wyant, PLLC. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Organization and Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh where he also obtained his Law Degree. 

Mr. Buck’s practice areas include labor/employment law, insurance defense litigation, state, county and municipal government law, civil rights, products liability, industrial accidents, extra-contractual bad faith claims, and construction actions.

Mr. H.F. Salsbery has been listed in Super Lawyers since 2010 in the Business Litigation category. Mr. Salsbery is Of Counsel in Bailey & Wyant. Mr. Salsbery received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kentucky and his law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law. He limits his practice to trials and appeals in all courts.

Mr. Salsbery has tried more than 150 civil and criminal cases and is a Board Certified Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Bailey & Wyant Sponsors Little League Softball Team

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC., sponsored the Hurricane Little League Girls Fast Pitch Softball Team in the West Virginia Little League 2014 District 3 All-Star Tournament.

The tournament was from June 21-23, featuring teams from St. Albans, Elkview, Boone County, Winfield, and Nitro.

The Hurricane team had nine players. This was the girls first time in a district championship all-star tournament.

Suleiman Oko-ogua named as one of Lawyers of Color’s Hot List Honorees

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC is pleased to announce that Suleiman Oko-ogua has been named to Lawyers of Color’s Second Annual Hot List. The list recognizes early- to mid-career attorneys excelling in the legal profession.

Oko-ogua was honored at a receptions for the Mid-Atlantic Region along with 99 other honorees July 22 at Foley & Lardner’s Washington, DC office, according to the Lawyers of Color website.

The honorees all work as in-house counsel, government attorneys, law firm associates or partners. The Lawyers of Color accepted nominations from mentors, peers and colleagues. The selection committee reviewed each nomination and researched legal publications in order to find the most suitable honorees. They also made editorial picks based on the candidates with noteworthy accomplishments, especially those who work with legal pipeline initiatives, according to the website.

“I am extremely pleased to be recognized by the Lawyers of Color,” Oko-ogua said.

Plaintiffs Complaint Dismissed Pursuant to Rule of the West Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure

On December 20, 2013, John P. Fuller and Suleiman O. Oko-ogua obtained a ruling from the Circuit Court of Kanawha County, West Virginia dismissing Plaintiff’s Complaint pursuant to Rule 41(b) of the West Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure in Williams v. Chandler.

The Plaintiff, a former Regional Jail inmate, had filed suit against three Regional Jail Correctional Officers alleging various violations of her civil rights.

The Plaintiff, then an inmate in the custody of the WVDOC, escaped from the custody of the WVDOC on November 15, 2013 and remains at large.

The CIrcuit Court held that the Plaintiff had effectively abandon her case, set for a January trial, by escaping from WVDOC custody and thereby preventing her from prosecuting her civil case.

Successful Representation of Clay Heating in Raleigh County, West Virginia

Vaughn Sizemore successfully defended Clay Heating in the magistrate court trial of Burchett v. Clay Heating in Raleigh County.

The plaintiff alleged faulty installation of a heat pump and claimed increased electric bills as a result of the errors.

The defense successfully showed the plaintiff’s personal repairs on his property resulted in the increased electric bills, not the installation of the heat pump.
